After going to see Dinner for Shmucks on Thursday night (funny movie, but not worth what happened later!), I came out of the theater only to find that the side window of my car had been shattered, and my laptop bag was missing from the back seat. It was quite a stressful night, but things are slowly getting resolved, and I'll be getting my car window fixed tomorrow.
But my laptop is gone. :-( It really makes me angry that someone saw it fit to steal a laptop (only to sell it for not that much money, I'm sure, as it was three years old) while I had to lose several of my documents and pictures. But it happens. And the bright side is that I get to buy a new computer!
It will take some time to shop for one and get all of that squared away, though, so I wanted to quickly post and say that future posts will be delayed a little bit. Don't worry, it sucks for me too. I have been suffering from computer withdrawal already! So, that's what's going on in Sophie Land. I will see you all soon. :-)
Aww, Sophie, I'm so sorry that happened! That sucks. I back up my hard drive about once every six months, so I would have lost a lot more than "several" files. You're right that crime, among other things, is incredibly inefficient. Broken window, no value to the crook, you and/or your insurance company have to pay to fix it. Stolen laptop and bag, the crook sells for pennies on the dollar, buys dope, is high for a few hours, has to do the whole thing over again. You and/or your insurance company have to buy a new laptop and bag, and the files are lost forever. The new owner of the computer also has access (unless your logon is password protected?) to your files, if they are curious enough to look. And the net result is a little money going to Columbia to some guy who lives in a mansion in the jungle. Infuriating.

A similar thing happened to me once. It's not the financial loss that is the most disturbing, but the violation of your personal space. Perhaps that's why the police offered me counseling instead of trying to catch the culprits...

ReplyDeleteSo sorry that that happened to you. The important thing to remember although a royal pain in the butt the computer, bag, car window and such can be replaced, but Sophie's can't so be thankful it was only material possessions. Best of luck in your search for a new computer.

Always hide any thing of value that is inside of your car. Cover up your laptop with a blanket or better yet, place it in the trunk.

ReplyDeleteWithout trivialising in any way what must have been a really horrible and traumatic experience for you... I guess one *could* try and look on the bright side and imagine that the break-in had been perpetrated by a young woman who'd be sentenced by the courts to a judicial caning...?
