Broken Window, Stolen Laptop, Sad Sophie

After going to see Dinner for Shmucks on Thursday night (funny movie, but not worth what happened later!), I came out of the theater only to find that the side window of my car had been shattered, and my laptop bag was missing from the back seat. It was quite a stressful night, but things are slowly getting resolved, and I'll be getting my car window fixed tomorrow.

But my laptop is gone. :-( It really makes me angry that someone saw it fit to steal a laptop (only to sell it for not that much money, I'm sure, as it was three years old) while I had to lose several of my documents and pictures. But it happens. And the bright side is that I get to buy a new computer!

It will take some time to shop for one and get all of that squared away, though, so I wanted to quickly post and say that future posts will be delayed a little bit. Don't worry, it sucks for me too. I have been suffering from computer withdrawal already! So, that's what's going on in Sophie Land. I will see you all soon. :-)

  1. Aww, Sophie, I'm so sorry that happened! That sucks. I back up my hard drive about once every six months, so I would have lost a lot more than "several" files. You're right that crime, among other things, is incredibly inefficient. Broken window, no value to the crook, you and/or your insurance company have to pay to fix it. Stolen laptop and bag, the crook sells for pennies on the dollar, buys dope, is high for a few hours, has to do the whole thing over again. You and/or your insurance company have to buy a new laptop and bag, and the files are lost forever. The new owner of the computer also has access (unless your logon is password protected?) to your files, if they are curious enough to look. And the net result is a little money going to Columbia to some guy who lives in a mansion in the jungle. Infuriating.

On the good side, it was theft, not robbery; you were not personally in danger.

I hope you manage to recover from this with the least possible trouble. I'll miss your online presence while you're gone.

  2. A similar thing happened to me once. It's not the financial loss that is the most disturbing, but the violation of your personal space. Perhaps that's why the police offered me counseling instead of trying to catch the culprits...

Anyway, sorry to hear the news.

  5. Don't Let It Get-To-You My Darling.
That B*****d Will Reap-The-Reward For His Actions Quickly. If All Of Us Focus Very Intensely On It, We Might Be Able To Turn-The-Hand-Of-Fate And Bring About His Demise. He Could Be Shot-In-The-Head By An Enraged Crack-Peddler When He Tries To Exchange The Laptop For Dope From His Stash. A Lead Slug Through-The-Skull-And-Brain Would Be Most Appropriate If You Ask Me.* * *

  6. Sorry to hear about your computer and window, that does suck. But, as you said, good reason to get a new computer, so there's a silver lining.

  7. It's always bad when suck falls in buckets rather than droplets. I personally look forward to helping you configure your new machine, however. :D

  8. So sorry that that happened to you. The important thing to remember although a royal pain in the butt the computer, bag, car window and such can be replaced, but Sophie's can't so be thankful it was only material possessions. Best of luck in your search for a new computer.

  9. Michael-
Thanks for sharing my frustration, and you're right, it could have been a lot worse. I was worried about the new owner potentially getting into my personal files (what a surprise that would be for them! spanking pictures and blog entries galore)but luckily, the laptop was password protected.

    pml-
You're right, and it sounds like your police were just as helpful as mine. When they arrived, they started cracking jokes in an attempt to make me feel better. I was in no mood!

    Erica-
I know, right? But I just got a shiny new laptop, so that helps a lot. Thanks. :-)

    Brett-
Thank you, and yes, it was about time for me to update my computer anyway!

    Cruel2BKind-
Haha, well, I don't know if so harsh a punishment is deserved, but I appreciate the creative camaraderie!

    Chris-
Yes, making lemonade out of lemons is aways a good idea. :-)

    Malignus-
Yay! And thanks for the help. ;-)

    kevhem25-
That's true, I am very thankful that no people were in danger, just some possessions and my peace of mind! Thank you. :-)

  10. Always hide any thing of value that is inside of your car. Cover up your laptop with a blanket or better yet, place it in the trunk.

  11. Sorry to hear that happened.

Without trivialising in any way what must have been a really horrible and traumatic experience for you... I guess one *could* try and look on the bright side and imagine that the break-in had been perpetrated by a young woman who'd be sentenced by the courts to a judicial caning...?
